Waiheke is the place to go !

Waiheke Island is our best kept secret, so I'm not sure why I'm sharing it here !

Waiheke is a 40 minute ferry ride from Auckland city. Else one can go from Half Moon Bay on the car ferry which takes a tad longer, but means that one has one's own wheels on the other side. The ferry ride is pleasant and one can watch the mainland slipping away, else read the paper and sip a coffee with one's egg and bacon muffin.

Why I love Waiheke is because it has so much to offer on a small island and I often dream that it's the ideal retreat to retire to ! There are superlative beaches to walk on and delectable eateries. There are 360' breath taking sea views from some vantage points and little yachts bobbing on shimmery waters around every cove. There are wine tasting venues at the various wine estates and a plethora of art galleries and funky shops. Waiheke is also renowned for its sculptures. It's an island that is a paradise for artists, musicians and people on the creative arty-farty funky and hippie-fied fringe. It's a vibrant place with villages and country, hills and hideaways. They have theatre, drama workshops, buskers and art festivals galore, as well as flea and farmers markets.

There are also delightful bachs to book for an easy and quick getaway from the mainland and a place that we return to again and again because of its magnetic pull. It's a place that replenishes the soul and restores one before hitting the mainland and the world of work again !
